Basketball was invented by James Naismith in December 1891. Naismith, a physical education instructor, created the sport as an indoor activity to keep his students active during the winter months. He developed a set of 13 basic rules and hung a peach basket at each end of the gymnasium, using soccer balls for play. The game quickly gained popularity, evolving into the fast-paced sport we know today.
