The act of scoring in volleyball is commonly referred to as a point. Points are earned when the ball successfully lands in the opponent's court, or when the opposing team makes an error. The scoring system used in modern volleyball is called rally scoring, where points can be scored by either team regardless of which served the ball. Matches are typically played to the best of five sets.
