The phenomenon used to explain the rainbow effect in water droplets is refraction, along with dispersion and reflection. When light enters a water droplet, it slows down and bends (refraction), separating the light into its component colors. Some of the light reflects off the inside surface of the droplet and refracts again as it exits, creating a spectrum of colors that form a rainbow.
