The role of the electron transport chain in cellular respiration is to facilitate the transfer of electrons derived from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen, resulting in the production of ATP. Located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, this series of protein complexes uses the energy from electron transfer to pump protons across the membrane, creating a proton gradient. Ultimately, ATP is synthesized as protons flow back across the membrane through ATP synthase.
