Mitochondria are often referred to as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through the process of cellular respiration. They are involved in energy production and also play critical roles in metabolism, including the regulation of the cell cycle and the initiation of apoptosis (programmed cell death). Mitochondria have their own DNA and can replicate independently within the cell, highlighting their evolutionary significance.
