What is the purpose of the ozone layer? 🔊
The purpose of the ozone layer is to protect life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Located in the stratosphere, this region of our atmosphere contains a high concentration of ozone (O3) molecules. By filtering out a significant portion of UV radiation, the ozone layer prevents skin cancers, cataracts, and other health issues in humans, as well as protecting ecosystems from damage. Depletion of the ozone layer due to CFCs and other pollutants poses significant environmental risks.
