The principle behind carbon dating is based on the decay of carbon-14, a radioactive isotope of carbon. Living organisms continuously intake carbon during their lifetime, but upon death, the uptake ceases, and the carbon-14 begins to decay at a known rate (half-life of about 5,730 years). By measuring the remaining carbon-14 levels in a sample, scientists can estimate the time since death.
