The primary source of atmospheric oxygen is photosynthesis, which occurs in plants, algae, and some bacteria. Through this process, these organisms convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using sunlight. Approximately half of the Earth's oxygen production comes from marine phytoplankton.
