The phenomenon responsible for the color of the sky is known as Rayleigh scattering. This occurs when sunlight interacts with the Earth's atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths of light more than longer red wavelengths. As a result, the sky appears blue during the day. During sunrise and sunset, the light has to pass through more atmosphere, causing further scattering and giving rise to red and orange hues.
