The main cause of ocean acidification is the increased absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere into ocean waters. As CO2 levels rise due to human activities like burning fossil fuels, a portion of this gas reacts with seawater, forming carbonic acid. This process lowers the pH of the ocean, which can adversely affect marine life, particularly organisms with calcium carbonate shells or skeletons, such as corals and mollusks.
