The initial step in the process of cellular respiration is glycolysis. During glycolysis, glucose is broken down in the cytoplasm to produce pyruvate, along with a small yield of ATP and NADH. This anaerobic process does not require oxygen and sets the stage for further energy extraction in aerobic respiration pathways, like the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain.
