The function of the diaphragm in the respiratory system is to facilitate breathing. This dome-shaped muscle separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and plays a key role in inhalation and exhalation. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, increasing the chest cavity volume and drawing air into the lungs. Conversely, when it relaxes, the volume decreases, pushing air out of the lungs.
