As energy moves through an ecosystem via the food chain, it typically decreases at each trophic level. This is due to energy losses mostly in the form of heat through metabolic processes during respiration, growth, and reproduction. Only a fraction of energy, typically around 10%, is transferred to the next level as organisms consume one another. This energy decrease explains why higher trophic levels such as apex predators are less abundant than lower levels like producers and herbivores.
