A constitutional convention is a gathering convened for the purpose of creating or amending a constitution. In the U.S., it is called when two-thirds of state legislatures request it, as outlined in Article V of the Constitution. The convention can propose amendments to the Constitution that must then be ratified by three-fourths of the states. Historically, the last constitutional convention occurred in 1787 to draft the current Constitution. Such gatherings are critical in addressing significant legal and societal shifts, but they can also raise concerns about the potential for radical changes to established governance structures.
