The first African American woman elected to Congress was Shirley Chisholm. Elected in 1968, she represented New York’s 12th Congressional District. Chisholm was a trailblazer not only as the first Black woman in Congress but also as a vocal advocate for social justice, education, and health care. She often faced challenges and critiques both for her race and gender yet remained undeterred. In 1972, she also became the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Chisholm’s legacy continues to inspire future generations to engage in politics and fight for equality and representation.
