Ferdinand Magellan is credited with the first European contact with the Pacific Ocean during his expedition in 1519-1522. Although he did not complete the journey himself, as he was killed in the Philippines, his fleet became the first to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan's expedition crossed the Atlantic Ocean, navigated through what is now the Strait of Magellan, and entered the Pacific, which he initially named "Sea of Peace." His exploration revealed the vastness of the Pacific and opened new maritime routes, significantly impacting European trade and exploration in subsequent years.
