The treaty that ended the Mexican-American War in 1848 was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This agreement was signed on February 2, 1848, and resulted from negotiations following the U.S. victory in the war. The treaty had significant consequences, as it led to the United States acquiring approximately 500,000 square miles of territory, including present-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. In exchange, the U.S. agreed to pay Mexico $15 million and assume certain claims of its citizens against Mexico. This territorial expansion significantly influenced the U.S. expansionist policy known as Manifest Destiny.
