The revolt against the British East India Company in India in 1857 is known as the Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Independence. It began when Indian soldiers, or sepoys, in the East India Company's army rebelled against the imposition of new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with animal fat, which was offensive to both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. The rebellion spread rapidly, leading to widespread violence and the temporary occupation of several major cities. Although ultimately suppressed, the Sepoy Mutiny marked a significant moment in Indian history, leading to the dissolution of the East India Company and direct British rule in India.
