Ferdinand Magellan is often credited with the first successful circumnavigation of the globe. Though he did not complete the journey himself, as he was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his expedition, which started in 1519 and concluded in 1522, was the first to navigate around the world, proving that the earth is round and the vastness of the oceans.
