The first successful blood transfusion was performed in 1818 by British obstetrician Dr. James Blundell. He conducted this pioneering procedure on women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage, transferring blood from one person to another to replenish lost blood volume. Although early transfusions faced significant challenges, including issues with blood compatibility and the lack of understanding about blood types, Blundell’s work laid the foundation for future advancements in transfusion medicine.
