The UN played a controversial role during the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. Although it had a peacekeeping force in the country, the UN's intervention was limited and often ineffective. Despite being aware of the escalating violence and human rights abuses, the organization failed to take decisive action to prevent or stop the genocide, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The lack of adequate resources, a firm mandate, and political will from member states were significant factors in the UN's inaction. The genocide sparked a reevaluation of the UN's capacity to prevent such atrocities in the future.
