The outcome of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 was the division of newly discovered lands between Spain and Portugal along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands. The treaty, brokered by Pope Alexander VI, aimed to resolve disputes over colonial territories following Christopher Columbus's voyages. Spain received rights to lands in the Americas, while Portugal gained control over parts of Africa, Asia, and Brazil.
