The outcome of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814 was the official end to the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty essentially restored pre-war boundaries, meaning neither side gained or lost territory. Although the war had seen various battles and significant events, including the burning of Washington, D.C., the treaty was a diplomatic agreement to return to a state of peace. The treaty was signed on December 24, 1814, but news of it reached the United States after the decisive Battle of New Orleans in January 1815, where American forces achieved a resounding victory.
