The Treaty of Ghent, signed in December 1814, ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty restored pre-war boundaries and effectively returned relations to the status quo, meaning neither side gained or lost territory. Although the war had not resolved the underlying issues such as trade restrictions and impressment of American sailors, the treaty restored peace and opened the door for improved relations between the two nations. The conclusion of the war also fueled a sense of nationalism in the U.S. and contributed to the subsequent Era of Good Feelings.
