The uprising against British rule in India in 1857 is known as the Sepoy Mutiny or the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It began largely among Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army due to grievances over cultural insensitivity, new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with animal fat, and broader discontent with British dominance.
