The main reason for the Spanish-American War, which erupted in 1898, was the U.S. intervention in Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain. Growing public sympathy for the Cuban rebels was fueled by sensationalist journalism, often referred to as "yellow journalism," which exaggerated Spanish atrocities. Additionally, economic interests played a role, as many American businesses had investments in Cuban sugar plantations. The sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor further inflamed public opinion and led Congress to declare war. The conflict ultimately resulted in the U.S. acquiring territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, marking a shift toward American imperialism.
