The type of biome characterized by very little rainfall is the desert biome. Deserts are defined by their extreme aridity, receiving less than 10 inches (250 mm) of precipitation annually. They are home to specially adapted flora and fauna that can survive in harsh conditions, such as cacti, succulents, and various drought-resistant animals. Despite appearing barren, deserts can host diverse ecosystems with unique species perfectly adapted to fluctuating temperatures and scarce water resources. The largest deserts can be hot, like the Sahara, or cold, like the Antarctic, illustrating the biome's variability across the globe.
