The natural disaster measured using a Richter scale is an earthquake. Developed in 1935, the Richter scale quantifies the magnitude of seismic waves produced by earthquakes, helping to assess their strength on a numerical scale. Each whole number increase on the scale represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude and roughly 31.6 times more energy release. Although the Richter scale has largely been supplanted by the moment magnitude scale (Mw) for more accurate measurements worldwide, it remains widely recognized.
