The principal component of natural gas is methane (CH4). Methane is a simple hydrocarbon consisting of one carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms. It is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and is the primary energy source for heating, cooking, and electricity generation in many homes and industries. Besides methane, natural gas can also contain small amounts of other hydrocarbons and impurities, but it is predominantly methane that makes up the fuel's energy content. Natural gas is considered a cleaner fossil fuel compared to coal and oil, producing less carbon dioxide when combusted.
