The largest type of fish is the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). Whale sharks are filter-feeding carpet sharks that inhabit warmer waters worldwide. They can grow to lengths of over 40 feet (12 meters) and weigh as much as 20 tons. Despite their massive size, whale sharks are gentle giants and primarily feed on plankton, small fish, and other tiny marine organisms. They are known for their distinctive patterned skin, featuring light spots and stripes on a dark background. Unfortunately, whale sharks face threats from fishing and habitat loss, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.
