The largest layer of the Earth's atmosphere is the thermosphere, which extends approximately from 85 kilometers (53 miles) to 600 kilometers (373 miles) above the Earth's surface. This layer is characterized by a significant increase in temperature with altitude, as it absorbs high-energy radiation from the sun. The thermosphere contains a sparse amount of particles, which can be ionized, leading to phenomena such as the northern and southern lights (auroras). Additionally, the thermosphere is where the International Space Station orbits. Although it is the largest layer in volume, the thermosphere has very low density, making it challenging to experience in terms of pressure and breathable air.
