During respiration in animals, carbon dioxide (CO2) is the gas produced as a byproduct. In aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down with the use of oxygen to generate energy, releasing carbon dioxide and water as waste products. This process occurs primarily in the cells' mitochondria. Animals exhale CO2 during breathing, which is also critical for maintaining the balance of gases in the atmosphere and is utilized by plants during photosynthesis.
