Pouches are most commonly associated with marsupials, a group of mammals that includes kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. Female marsupials possess pouches that serve as protective structures for their young during development. After birth, marsupial infants are born in a very undeveloped state and crawl into the mother's pouch to continue growing.
